Krishnamacarya is regarded as a father of modern yoga in the West. His students include his son TKV Desikachar, BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois (ashtanga yoga), Indra Devi and Vanda Scaravelli.
Each of these students has utilised their work and study with Krishnamacarya to develop well known and unique schools of yoga. Desikachar studied with his father until his father's death at 101. During that time he continued to build upon his father's pioneering work with the application of yoga to individual circumstances.
One of Krishnamacarya's maxims was that: Yoga is the cultivation of a stable mind and a healthy body.
In this approach, emphasis is placed on the importance of the relationship between breath, mind and movement. The breath is seen as a support for both physical work and meditative practice. Linking breath and movement is at the heart of the yoga of Krishnamacarya and Desikachar.
